White-Footed House Ants (Technomyrmex difficilis) are a species of Ant that has become quite common in the Cairns region, specifically bad around the upper regions of Earlville but now throughout many suburbs of Cairns. A medium to small ant that is mostly black in colour roughly 2.5 mm - 3 mm in length. Quite often we receive calls from customers who are getting ants in their homes at night only to get up in the morning and they've disappeared, this is a common characteristic of White-Footed House Ants. When the colony is large you'll see them at all hours of the day but initially you may only find them late at night. White-Footed House Ants can be a difficult ant species to eliminate because of their incredibly large colonies, but control can be achieved. |
Predominantly a sweet feeding Ant, we will generally use a combination of baits and a non repellent chemical spray such as Seclira/Termidor to eliminate the colony, often we may need to do a follow up to wipe out any remaining ants. They are often located foraging along branches and tree trunks in search of nectar's or sap sucking insects. One thing a home owner can do to help prevent White-Footed House Ant infestations is to cut trees and shrubs back to prevent them from touching the walls, if trees and shrubs are touching the walls it allows bridging to occur and the ants use these trees as an easy access to your house. |
You can watch this Youtube video to the right to see how these ants can come out at night, yet the morning after there will not be an ant in sight. If you're having issues with this ant species than give Pest Off Solutions a call to help you eliminate this troublesome ant from your property. | |
