The Bi-coloured Trailing Ant - Monomorium floricola - is another invasive ant species in the Cairns region. This ant pest is reasonably common in many homes around Tropical areas, they can often be found trailing around cornices in long distinct slow moving trails. Similar to it's sibling species the Pharoah Ant (Monomorium pharoanis) its nests contain multiple queens, and it forms new colonies by budding of its population. |
This ant generally ranges in size from 1.5 mm to 2.0 mm, they are known to feed dead insects/insect eggs, honey dew and flower nectar. They can have a mild sting and some people can have a reaction to their bite but it is relatively uncommon to get bitten. The best treatment method for this ant species is a combination of pesticide sprays and heavy baiting so they can take the baits back to the nest and eliminate the entire colony.
