Funnel Ants

Funnel Ants (Aphaenogaster spp.) are about 5 mm in length once they hit adulthood and they range from a tan-brownish colour to black in appearance.

Funnel Ants live outdoors and prefer open ground and turf to create and burrow the funnels to their nests.
Funnel Ants are notorious for producing unsightly mounds in yards and properties which causes disturbance to the soil structure.
This species of ant are omnivores which means they can eat proteins and will also occasionally eat sugars from natural sources.

This ant will cause significant problems in your yards to your turf and lawns. The tunnels built underground are extensive and the displacement of soil can be a huge problem.

Often the ground is weakened to the point of collapse creating an uneven yard.

The mounds also cause rapid deterioration to your lawn mower blades as the blades are having to run over and cut through these clumps of soil as you mow your lawn.

Funnel Ants can be aggressive when defending the nest and do have the ability to cause a mild sting when bitten.
