Stop Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are a real nuisance around the Cairns area in the warmer and wetter months. They breed very rapidly and can become a real issue if you don't take steps to control their numbers. But as with nearly all pests, control starts with prevention.
In addition to the irritating mosquito bites, some types of mozzies are linked to the spread of diseases like Dengue fever, Ross River fever and several forms of encephalitis.

Here are some tips on preventing mosquitoes from ruining your summer.

Get rid of standing water

  • Mosquitoes require standing water to lay their eggs.       Removing old tyres, stored containers and pot plant saucers that hold water will significantly reduce the breeding areas around your yard.                                    Preventing mosquitoes depends heavily on habitat elimination.

Clean out your Gutters

  • Not only do you need to remove all sources of standing water around your property, it is extremely important to keep your gutters clean from leaves and debris, as this will cause a build up of damp debris, which will then lead to water retention in the gutters. Mosquitoes will lay their eggs in the stagnant water that is sitting in these damp enticing areas for them.

Change water sources weekly

  • Things like bird baths, pet bowls and fountains hold water for long periods, and changing or replacing the water in these sources weekly will break the mosquito breeding cycle. By keeping these regularly changed and cleaned it won't allow the mosquitoes larvae time to breed.

Keep your pool maintained

  • Mosquitoes will generally use any water source to lay their eggs and breed. A pool that is not properly maintained will give mosquitoes a vast expanse of water to breed rapidly. Make sure you're keeping up regular maintenance on your pool to eliminate this potential breeding ground. Even little kids wading pools should be checked often to help prevent possible breeding areas.

Screen or seal entry points

  • Mosquitoes are very small and can enter your homes via very small access holes. Make sure all your doors and windows are screened and if not try and keep them shut during the mosquito season to help prevent the from entering your home.
