American Cockroach (Periplaneta americana) are probably the most common cockroach we deal with domestically around the Cairns region. This cockroach is generally reddish-brown in colour and roughly 3-5 cm in length. Commonly infesting kitchens, bathrooms and many other rooms throughout the house, this cockroach pest has a preference for habitats where food and water supplies are in abundance. Often found breeding in large numbers in septic tanks, in wall voids beside bathrooms and voids below kitchen cupboards.
The American cockroach is a quick traveller, often darting out of sight when someone enters a room, and it can fit into tiny cracks and crevices despite it's relatively large size. It is very common to notice American cockroach when you get up at night and turn a light on only for them to quickly scurry off out of sight.

The odorous secretions from American cockroach can be quite offensive when the populations are high, with a distinct smell coming from the cupboards once opened.

It will predominantly be around moist areas of the house, but can survive in dry areas if they have access to water.
American cockroach are opportunistic feeders that eat a great variety of materials including cheese, tea, beer, leather, bread, book bindings, flakes of dried skin, hair, plant materials, soiled clothing and even dead animals.

Compared to the German cockroach and the Brown-Banded cockroach, the American cockroach is relatively easy to treat, with many household sprays being reasonably effective in killing this pest if sprayed directly. However, for long term control we recommend calling in a professional.
